On November 22, the British Virgin Islands Lawn Tennis Association (BVI LTA) and Tortola Sports Club (TSC) with the support of VP Bank and Premier Tennis and in conjunction with the Necker Cup – the most exclusive Pro-Am tennis event in the world – held a Necker Cup Kids Day at the TSC, which was headlined by the world’s famous tennis coaches and entertainers – Wayne Bryan and Murphy Jensen.
“The return of Wayne and Murphy created a lot of excitement among children and parents in the tennis community,” said Amine Elouazzani, TSC Director of Tennis. “Their fun personalities and coaching talent is exceptional and they rocked the show once again. Rain or no rain, the children were on the court for five hours and some even stayed after the event to play more tennis. The exciting part this year was to see how much the children improved from last year and how the sport of tennis is growing in the BVI. It was a fun day for everyone to enjoy but also a huge motivation for the children and us to continue working hard. Many parents and children might not realize this but we are very lucky to be given the opportunity to expose the children to world-famous coaches, who conduct tennis clinics at professional tournaments, and who have experience coaching top professional players, so having Wayne and Murphy here on Tortola is truly a treat. We also wouldn’t be able to put this event together without the support of the Necker Cup, VP Bank, Premier Tennis, JML Cargo & Logistics, BVI LTA, Island Roots Café, and an exceptional group of volunteers, which consisted of loyal parents who have children in our tennis programs, students from Cedar International School, TSC Members, TSC High Performance Junior Tennis Team, and many more dedicated people.”
VP Bank has been the lead sponsor of the Necker Cup Kids Day for the past two years. “It was such a fun day,” said Sjoerd Koster, VP Bank General Manager – Client Business. “There were over 80 children in attendance on Saturday and they were as young as 3 years old all the way up to 16 years old. The day started with rain but the children jumped on the courts regardless. Soaked in water but with big smiles they played on for hours – a priceless moment. We are so proud to be involved with this event and very impressed with the direction where tennis in the BVI is going. We can’t wait for the next year’s Necker Cup Kids Day already!”
“The Necker Cup Kids Day is the perfect finish to the Necker Cup,” said Mike Richards, Co-Founder of the Necker Cup. “After the week-long activities on Necker Island with the tennis pros and legends, we always look forward to the Necker Cup Kids Day on Tortola to see how the children in the BVI are doing. It makes us happy that tennis in the territory is growing and that we can give back to the community through Necker Cup initiatives. This year, we also decided to bring a young rising tennis star from Great Britain, 13-year old Olivia Elliott, to be part of the Necker Cup Kids Day, which I think made it even more fun for the kids as they could relate to a young player well and get a glimpse of how they could play if they continue to work hard.”
Partial proceeds from the auctions at the Necker Cup will benefit the BVI LTA, who in turn supports various tennis programs in the BVI. “BVI LTA is extremely grateful for everyone who made the Necker Cup Kids Day possible. We were very happy with the attendance of the children and the level of tennis they showed. Seeing a progress in the children’s development but also the increased number of children who participate in tennis is the goal of our organization. To be able to support different tennis initiatives is very important to us and we are very thankful for the contributions from Necker Cup,” said Jeremiah Frett, Vice-President of the BVI LTA.
