Vigil For Nickera Smith Scheduled For 17 May

A candlelight vigil has been organized in memory of Nickera Smith, the young lady that was reported missing on 29 January, and was pronounced dead on 28 April.

The vigil is scheduled for Tuesday 17 May at the Festival Grounds in Road Town. The procession will take the road en route to the Noel Lloyd Positive Actions Movement Park.

The organizers will be providing candles on site and are inviting members of the public to attend. Persons attending the vigil are encouraged to wear blue in tribute to Nickera.

At the vigil location there will be the signing of an “In Memory” photograph, a moment of remembrance and a moment of silence. There will also be the releasing of balloons.

On Tuesday 3 May, newly appointed Commissioner of Police Michael Matthews announced that the murder investigation of Nickera Smith will be given top priority by the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force.

The Commissioner while speaking at his first press conference told the media: “You will all be aware of the tragic case of the missing young lady from the islands who now sadly is a murder inquiry, and that is receiving top priority by the superintendent’s team as we speak.”

Last Thursday, April 28  Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Alwin James issued a statement confirming that the remains that were found in Hawks Nest, Tortola was those of Nickera who was reported missing by her family on 29 January 2016.

“Forensic testing was conducted and the results were returned yesterday. The appointed Family Liaison Officer met with the family yesterday afternoon, advised them of the findings and offered condolences on behalf of the Force as support continues in what is a very difficult time. Today, we can now share with the public that the remains found are those of Nickera Smith,” the DCP said.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police also confirmed that the police was dealing with the matter as a murder enquiry.

Nickera Smith was last seen on 27 January leaving her Hope Hill address. She was at the time wearing a black/grey jacket, stone-washed three-quarter length pants and sneakers.
