Struiken shatters 21-year old Mourant College Classic Series record

Clif Struiken went out hard after taking the lead from the start, and was rewarded by taking down Lyndel Roberts’ 21-year old Mourant College Classic Series record of 10 minutes, 45.3 seconds, with a time of 10:38.09.

In just his second race, Clif Struiken did what many had been trying to do before—brake  Lyndell Roberts’ 21-year old Mourant College Classic Series record of 10 minutes, 45.3 seconds established on November 20, 1997.

After coming within four seconds in his debut and knowing where he had to push, Struiken followed his script and was rewarded with taking down the mark as Roberts looked on, when he stopped the clock at 10:38.09, in the field of 116 participants. His wife Kim took the women’s division in 13:13.31, marking the first time a husband and wife combo had placed first in the men and women’s divisions of the series dating back to its October 19, 1996 start.

“The plan was to go a bit faster this time as I was a bit off the record, so I knew that I could gain it in the middle bit because I slowed down a bit too much last time,” Clif reflected. “I actually started a bit faster this time so my first kilometer was about three seconds faster than last time and I managed to keep up that pace. At the second kilometer, I know that I was about 10 seconds below the record and I lost a bit after that. But, it was a strong race. A good race. I was grasping for breath pretty soon, but that just happens when you run that fast.”

He added: “I’m very happy. It was a good race and now, on to the next one.”

As he finished, Roberts congratulated him on getting the record.

“He said he was a bit jealous but at the same time, he was happy that he could see it,” Clif noted. “The record is from 1997. It’s 2018 now. Maybe in the next few years’ time, I’ll see the  next generation breaking my record or sooner I hope. It’s always good that records are broken because that means progress and that’s why we’re here. Next time, someone will break my record and I’ll come back and witness that.”

Roberts said the environment, but with a larger turnout, reminded him of 21 years ago.

“I didn’t come to run, just to support,” he said. “It was a good race. And good to see all the people out here.”

After making her debut in the last race, Kim, sixth overall, said she was anxious for Saturday’s race.

“All I want to do was to get a better time than last time, so I was pushing and pushing without looking at the time to see how fast I can go,” she said. “I did break my time by 32 seconds, so I’m really proud and happy with that.”

Kim was surprised to learn that they were the first husband and wife combo to win a Mourant College Classic Series’ race in its 23-year history.

‘I’m really, really happy that we’re the first family to do so and I hope that many other families follow, start training together and working on their fitness together,” she said. “So families, get out there together. You all can do it and take our place.”

Race Director Stephanie Russ Penn, said she knew Clif came out with the plan to break the record that had been held for a very long time, after coming close in his debut.

“He absolutely splattered the mark which was really awesome,” she said. “It was actually more awesome to see him with Lyndell Roberts who broke the record. So, it was a record breaking day and a beautiful day and a great race No 2. I’m looking forward to what the season brings, because Clif certainly can run faster.”
