In becoming the All Time Mourant College Classic Series best performer, Clif Struiken chopped eight seconds off the 10 minutes and 38.12 seconds set while breaking Lyndell Roberts’ 1997 course record in the second race on Sept 29, to bring the curtains down on the 2018 series with another record performance Saturday in Paraquita Bay.

“The goal today was to run very relaxed especially since I’ve been having some calf issues in the last few weeks and haven’t been focusing on speed,” explained Struiken, who stopped the clock at 10:30.9, while Neil Riley followed in 10:41.86, becoming the second fastest performer in the 23-year history of the event. “I was just trying to get my miles in for the 10K next week and the BVI Half Marathon on December 1, and just to make sure there wasn’t additional tension building up in my calf, because my Achilles started to pull a bit, so it was all about being relaxed. Apparently, that relaxed training in the past few weeks paid off because I didn’t slow down and I was about nine seconds under my record. This I  think is very, very good.”

Struiken said time wasn’t on his mind, but being able to push and running without any stress.

“Often you hear the elite runners talk about a state of smooth flow, where they just run easily but fast, and I think that worked for me today and it’s something to take into the upcoming races,” he said.

In the women’s division, Katrina Lindsay, fourth overall, ran 12:17.31, the 3rdfastest time ever by a woman and the No 2 all time performance.

“Today was good race and I managed to get paced by Derek (Rawlins) and Jelani (Croal) so that kept me going and I felt good going up the hill, better than in any of the other races,” she noted. “I tried to keep with Jelani coming down and I good a good finish compared to the last race. So today was a good race. I felt strong and really enjoyed it. It’s a big personal best for me, so thanks to Limiel (Hodge) for all his coaching again.”

Race director Stephanie Russ Penn said it was an excellent finish to the series and couldn’t ask for more than having the record broken by the overall champion. She said the race was extremely fast and many runners saw improved times.

“It was just an excellent finale at the end of the day,” she said. “The 2018 series has been absolutely inspiring. We had one race in 2017 (because of the hurricane) and persons came out in 2018 and they made sure the series happened. Our numbers were down but they were still excellent numbers. Now that the momentum is back, I can’t wait for 2019, so I’m looking forward to bigger and better.”

The Rotary Club of Tortola continued its mastery of the Service Clubs Cross Country Division with its 13thconsecutive title.
