The highly publicized grand opening of the Tortola Pier Park was postponed until 16 February. The announcement was made during the 21 December sitting of the House of Assembly by Minister for Communications and Works, Hon. Mark Vanterpool.
The public was given access to the Park from Tuesday 22 December, but the Minister announced that Government decided to reschedule the grand opening to February, when more shops would have been outfitted and opened.
Hon. Vanterpool explained that two final components of the project are expected to be completed by the first half of 2016. These are a restaurant development on the south western side and a floating dock on the north eastern side.
The inaugural visit of the Disney Fantasy ship was chronicled in the Disney blog. The post among other things noted that some of the stores at the Tortola Pier Park were not open on the day of the ship’s first visit, and that passengers will not get the full BVI pier park experience until February.
“It does appear that some portions of the Pier Park are operational with the opening of Park Lane shown in the Facebook post…However, a passenger aboard the Disney Fantasy tweeted that there were only a few shops open,” the blog noted with accompanying copy of a Facebook photo and twitter tweet.
The Disney site also noted that the Tortola Pier Park opening date is now set for 16 February 2016, and pointed out that the new day coincides with another call by the Disney Fantasy.
However, the Disney team blogged that their guests may not have the BVI experience originally envisioned now that the Park is not fully completed: “With the new opening date the passengers on the first four sailings to Tortola may not get the full port shopping experience they originally hoped. Both of the Disney Wonder repositioning cruises beginning with January’s Galveston to San Juan followed by February’s San Juan to Miami will visit Tortola before the grand opening of the Pier Park. “
The Disney Fantasy is scheduled to visit Tortola every other week during her seven-night Eastern Caribbean sailings. The Disney Magic will return Tortola in April 2016 during her three seven-night Eastern Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral.
