One Love moved to the top of the BVI Football Association Men’s League standings following a 3-2 victory over Virgin Gorda’s Sugar Boys on Saturday at the A. O. Shirley Grounds, in a match between the league’s top teams.
One Love’s Darren Rhodes’ right foot shot past the keeper 11 minutes in, gave them a 1-0 edge, before the Sugar Boys’ Morvin Dainty’s header two minutes later to knot the match at 1-1.
The Sugar Boys capitalized on a penalty in the 18th minute of play, after Mohammed Kochour was brought down in the box and Michael Batichon, converter the penalty for a 2-1 lead.
One Love’s Richard Morgan equalized the match at 2-2 in the 26.th They then went back on the attach and were also awarded a penalty in the 36th minute of play, which Leonard Davis converted for the 3-2 lead they would hold on to for victory as both teams played through a scoreless second half, despite One Love playing with 10 men after Shevaughn Thomas was red carded for using abusive language in front of the referee after the halftime whistle was blown.
Sunday on Virgin Gorda, defending champions Islanders, currently in third place, came up against a seemingly revived Sea Argo. Clive Williams of Sea Argo was the first to score in the 41st minute of play, as they carried a 1-0 lead into the half.
The Islanders’ Paul Thomas scored the equalizer in the 50th minute and Ronelle Caines dashed Sea Argo’s hopes when he scored their second goal, for a 2-1 victory.
The Panthers stayed in fourth place after playing to a 1-1 draw with Old Madrid. The Panthers was first to open the scoring, when striker Nigel Saunderson scored from a free kick five minutes in. A revived Old Madrid equalized the match when Xavier John scored just before the half.
