Ministries watch Students Lunch


Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon. Ronnie Skelton announced in the House of Assembly on 11 September, that he will be signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Minister for Education and Culture, Hon. Myron Walwyn pledging the commitment of the two Ministries to work closely to promote the well being, health, and academic achievement of school children.

The MoU, the Minister said outlines strategies that would be undertaken to establish a safe, healthy school environment to ensure student success, expand knowledge and ultimately improve the overall health and productivity of the Virgin Islands population.

“I want to thank my colleague the Minister for Education and Culture and his team for their commitment to this whole endeavour,” Hon. Skelton said. The Minister also announced that the partnership is an effort to provide the children of the Territory with the best start in life.

During the 20 December 2013 Sitting of the House of Assembly, Hon. Walwyn announced that the Ministry of Education as a means to ensure that students are healthy and receiving needed nutrition will be taking steps to monitor what students eat at lunchtime.

The Minister disclosed that a keen watch of the types of foods parents pack in the lunch kits of students will be done and that similar scrutinizing will be done as it relates to the meals being served in and around school premises.
