Government to rent facility for Victims of Domestic Violence & Other Social Problems

The Government of the Virgin Islands is planning to rent a residential facility. This announcement was made by Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon. Ronnie Skelton during the signing of the protocols for Domestic Violence and the Protection of Children.

The Minister mentioned that there is a need a secured premise that will provide lodgings to various vulnerable groups, and announced: “We realize that after this (signing) is done there will be a need for accommodation of people for a short period of time and I think the Permanent Secretary and I haven’t brought it to my boss’s attention; but we are looking for residential facilities for these very reasons.”

Hon. Skelton stated that the property secured will house not only domestic violence victims, but also some homeless individuals: “… both for the homeless, the people on the streets and to have some level of accommodation for people who find themselves in domestic violence situations or even children who need to be in a secured environment for a period of time,” the Health Minister stated.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Development, Petrona Davies added that there is the Rainbow Children’s Home for children in need of care and protection, but she explained that what is sought is a facility for children who come in conflict with the law; and she announced that the Ministry is working to find such a facility.
