Global Entrepreneur Week Observed in BVI

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) is among 150 countries around the world that celebrated Global Entrepreneur Week (GEW).  The GEW initiative is an international occurrence that highlights entrepreneurship in six continents. It emerged in 2008, as a result of Enterprise Week UK and Entrepreneurship Week USA 2007. Since its creation, more than 10 million people from 102 countries have participated in related activities. Here in the BVI the activities for GEW are organized by Barnes PR.

2013 was the pilot staging of the BVI leg of the week-long initiative, and in 2014 the observance continues. Sachkia Barnes of Barnes PR told The Island Sun newspaper that after learning about the initiative she decided to bring it to the Territory.

Barnes said: “As an entrepreneur, I wanted to have a more supportive and engaging environment to discuss business and its impact on our local economy. I believe that by having such an environment, we stand a greater chance at really helping to solve some of our greatest challenges as we move forward as a Territory. So for me Global Entrepreneurship Week is really an occasion to celebrate the innovators and job creators that are the entrepreneurs in our community, but I also hope the week inspires a new generation of local entrepreneurs to really help drive our local economy.”

In recapping the inaugural staging of the BVI GEW activities, the organizer announced that she would give the undertaking a pass rating: “Last year I felt was very successful. For the first year we got the GEW UK High Impact Award and more importantly, at the local level, the feedback received was encouraging from entrepreneurs themselves who said they wanted more opportunities to engage each other,” Barnes said.

The 2014 GEW activities commenced on Monday 17 November and included feature articles in the various media, on Tuesday there was a presentation at the Bregado Flax Educational Centre, on Wednesday there was a presentation at the Virgin Islands Technical School and a Google Hangout with female entrepreneurs in the region and USA; and on Thursday there was an ‘Ideas and Cocktails’ event which was hosted by Premier, Dr. the Hon. D. Orlando Smith.
