Chairman of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP), Hon. Julian Fraser announced on 26 November during the VIP Let’s Talk radio program that if elected his Government will once again consider drag racing.
Hon. Fraser who spoke briefly on the matter pointed out: “Our young people must be assured of a future in these Virgin Islands and it is for that reason consideration will be given to the things that interest them during their period of youth. Things such as motorcycling, jet skiing and drag racing.”
During its 2007-2011 administration, the VIP Government conducted a study and survey to consider the feasibility of drag racing. The matter was even discussed during the campaign.
In the 2011 survey on drag racing it was announced that 60.6 percent of the sample poll between the age of 25-50 is in favour and feel good about the implementation of drag racing as a sports and tourism product.
In presenting the figures, then Minister of Sports Hon. Andrew Fahie announced in the House of Assembly on 18 April 2011 that drag racing could be a reputable sport that can boost the economy and take stakeholders out of harms way.
