At a press conference on Tuesday 13 May, Digicel BVI announced its collaboration with the BVI Football Association (BVIFA) to form Digicel Centre of Excellence, an initiative that is geared at developing football skills of young players.
Starting in June, 60 young footballers from Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Anegada will be engaging in weekly football development programs as part of the two-year Digicel Centre of Excellence initiative.
During a press conference to launch the initiative, it was noted that the weekly program will begin next month and benefit children from Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Anegada.
Mr. Declan Cassidy, Digicel BVI CEO explained that his company is the platinum sponsor of the initiative and will be donating $10,000 to the BVIFA: “The Digicel Centre of Excellence is about offering opportunities to children who have shown ability in football to develop their skills further and potentially to go on to represent the BVI regionally and internationally. These are extraordinary children with already established skills and the Digicel Centre of Excellence will build on that.”
Mr. Andy Bickerton, President of the BVI Football Association stated that the partnership is a step in the right direction for the improvement of football here in the Territory: “The BVIFA is excited to be partnering with Digicel to bring fruition to one of its long-term strategic projects, namely a Centre of Excellence out of which our youth players will be able to fulfil their dreams as footballers and receive the highest quality training on and off the field that the modern game demands,” he added.
Mr. Keith Griffith, the Technical Director BVI Football Association told the media that during the weekend coaching sessions the 60 footballers will learn professional game techniques and improve areas such as passing, controlling, dribbling, shooting, and goal keeping.
