The number of child abuse cases that were published in observance of Child Abuse Awareness Month indicates a decrease in reported cases.
The release published on 13 April disclosed that the Social Development Department reported 31 cases of child abuse in 2014. These cases included two matters of neglect, 17 cases of sexual abuse, ten cases of physical abuse and two cases of abandonment.
In 2011 the Social Development Department saw an increase in the number of child abuse cases reported between 2008 and 2009. In 2008, 52 cases were reported and the numbers rose to 74 in 2009. In 2010, that number dropped to 63 cases.
A number of activities are planned in observation of Child Abuse Awareness Month 2015. The list of activities include primary school visits,a message by the Minister for Health and Social Development, Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton, the annual ‘Drive Blue Wear Blue’ initiative on 24 April, radio and television commercials and appearances as well as a special movie series to be aired on JTV channel 55.
