BVI horses eying win in Virgin Islands Triple Crown

By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway
When the first leg of the Virgin Islands Triple Crown kicks off at the Ellis Thomas Downs on Sunday, the two BVI horses entered will be eyeing a victory.
The inaugural event which began in 2012 with a 2013 follow up was cancelled last year because of disagreements within the body comprised of members from the horse racing associations on St. Thomas, St. Croix and Tortola.
“I’m looking for a victory,” Chilean Boy’s Lesmore Smith said. “I’m confident. They say I shouldn’t be there, but it’s a race and at the end of the day, we’re there and we’re gonna run. The race is a few hours ahead so lets see what happens.”
Trading Secrets’ Alex Lake said he’s looking forward to the race and said it will be a wonderful day in horse racing. He’s added that it’s a wonderful race card on offer with St. Croix and St. Thomas horses involved making it a big day.
“We put Trading Secrets in there and we think he’s going to do a fabulous job in that race,” Lake said. “He’s going to run his race and you can look out for some action this race day again. We can see he’s progressing and he has that fight,” Lake added of his horse that nosed out Still Unbroken after laying off the pace on Boxing Day. “He’s off a good bloodline and has the heart of a winner. We’re going for the top and bringing the trophy back home to the BVI.”
St. Thomas’ Governor’s Cup champ Swag Daddy and Still Unbroken will be the St. Thomas representatives while St. Croix will have debutant St. Moose in the line up.
“He has been training good and I hopes he gets a chute, breaks sharp and runs a little better this time and I think he’ll be ok,” stated Michael “Lu Lu” Smith of Swag Daddy.
The second leg of the Triple Crown will be over 11/8 Mile on Feb 15 at the Randall “Doc” James Racetrack on St. Croix. The final leg over One Mile is scheduled for March 15 at the Clinton Phipps track on St. Thomas.
The card is expected to kick off at 12:30 p.m.
