28 year old High Jump Record falls

A High Jump national record established by Virgin Gorda’s Takola Creque in 1994 and twice equaled, fell over the weekend at the Utah State Aggies Speed and Power meet in Logan, Utah.

It was the school’s first indoor home meet since 2009 and Xiomara “Gia” Malone, who opened her 2022 season with a leap of 1.62m (5’3¾”) sailed over 1.66m (5’5¼”) to win the competition. In the process, she took down Creque’s 1.65 (5’5”) BVI record that was tied by Malone’s sister Chantel in 2008 and her former Timber Creek High School teammate Z’Niah “Z” Hutchinson in 2016.

She also won the Long Jump after cutting the sand at 5.37m (17’7¾”). Gia who has a season’s best of 8.94 seconds in the 60m Hurdles, ran 9.15 to advance to the final, but did not contest the final.

DeFreitas’ Collegiate Best

University of Central Florida’s Beyonce DeFreitas, won her 400m Heat at the Charlie Thomas Invitational held at Texas A&M, when she ran 56.00 seconds, the fastest time of her collegiate career. She was 16th overall. DeFreitas has a personal best of 55.48 from 2016.

Brown’s 60/200m

Southwest Baptist’s Zara Brown was eight in the Bearcat Invite 60m dash in 7.72 seconds, competing in Missouri. She ran 7.73 seconds to advance to the final. Brown had a 200m time of 25.16 seconds, which was the ninth best mark of the competition.

Frett’s Season opener

After opening her season at the Bob Pollock Invitational in Clemson, South Carolina with 60 and 200m times of 7.87 seconds and 26.17 seconds, Florida A&M’s Zakharia “Zakie” Frett lowered her 60m time to 7.72 secs at the USA Jaguar Invitational in Alabama. Her time was ninth overall in the competition.

Collegiate Baseball

East Georgia State Catcher Kennard Dawson, went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI’s against Roane State Community College, during an 8-2 victory on the front end of a double header. He did not play in the second game. Dawson who played with Great Britain in both the European U23 Baseball Championships and the Sr. Championships in Italy over the summer, has hit safely in every game in which he has played.

He opened the season with a hit against Scoutz USA Post Grad, during an 11-10 loss on Jan 29. In the second game of the double header, he tripled in two at bats and had 3 runs batted in during and 8-1 win over Scoutz. Dawson went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI’s in a 20-6 victory over Scoutz.

Collegiate Basketball

 D’Moi Hodge had a game high 21 points to go with 5 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 assists and a steal, in the Cleveland State Vikings’ 84-71 victory over Milwaukee on Sunday. They improved 16-5 on the season and 12-2 in Horizon Conference play. Hodge was coming off an 11 points, 3 assists, 3 steal and 2 rebounds contest in the Vikings’ 85-69 win over Wisconsin—Green Bay.

Meanwhile, Long Island University Sharks’ Eral Penn, finished with 19 points, 6 rebounds 2 steals and an assist in 30 minutes, in their 79-64 loss to Wagner on Saturday. They’re 9-13 on the season. Penn narrowly missed a double double with 22 points and 9 rebounds in the Sharks 79-75 win over Sacred Heart on Thursday. He also had 6 blocks, 4 assists and a steal in 36 minutes.
