Minister for Education and Culture, Hon. Myron Walwyn joined the community to express sadness at the news of the fatal accident that occurred in St Vincent and the Grenadines on Monday. Hon. Walwyn noted his sympathies via Facebook on Tuesday morning.

The Minister said: “I would like to express my condolences to the friends and families of those lost in yesterday’s fatal accident in St.Vincent. I sympathize with the Vincentian nationals living in the BVI who lost loved ones and ask that we all pray for the grieving families during this time of national mourning.”

St Vincent and the Grenadines media reported that at least seven persons died as a result of the accident. The bodies of five victims were recovered from the sea, one died at the hospital and another died en route to the hospital.

The accident allegedly took place between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. on 12 January in Rock Gutter, an area between Owia and Fancy on the northeastern tip of St. Vincent. Reports indicate that the bus which is licensed to carry 18 passengers was packed,  when it departed Fancy, the northernmost community on that island.

Students heading to secondary schools in North Union and Georgetown, St Vincent were said to fill the transport which met an unfortunate end.
