The BVI Shipping Registry has been given the all clear to register merchant vessels, a feature that has the potential to propel the Territory much further into the shipping registration industry. The announcement was made during a press conference at the Premier’s Office on 19 August.
Now that the clearance to register vessels of unlimited tonnage has been given by the United Kingdom efforts to make use of the opportunities are being considered by the Registry.
In fact, Premier Dr. the Hon. D. Orlando Smith disclosed that the Government intends to amend the Merchant Shipping legislation. Dr. Smith mentioned that there have been some Cabinet discussions on the matter, but did not provide an estimation of when the legislation will be taken before the House of Assembly.
The legislation to be amended is the Virgin Islands Merchant Shipping Act, 2001.
