The exact figure of how much the Territory imports on a daily, monthly, yearly basis is still unknown. In fact, the Central Statistics Office announced that up-to-date trade data and figures surrounding merchandise trade remains unavailable. Current merchandise trade statistics would be key in the assessment of overall trade by noting the month-over-month and year-over-year changes on imports.
However, in a report that was previously laid in the House of Assembly the Unit stated that there continues to be a lag in merchandise trade statistics due to the manual processing method of the data.
According to the report the volume of data, and the limited amount of manpower assigned to it continues to result in difficulties keeping statistics up-to-date.
Additionally, the Central Statistics Office said that at times there are technical difficulties recording information especially quantities noted on T12s and T13s forms based on how they are listed.
The issue is further compounded by the fact that the Unit is reportedly experiencing difficulties gaining electronic access to the Customs Automated Processing System (CAPS) database.
