In the early hours of Tuesday morning, 8 April, smoke was seen in Road Town, in the Village Cay, Banco Popular area, and sometime after 3 am a raging fire that seemed to seriously threaten the entire marina and nearby buildings on Wickhams Cay I had developed. Heavy winds blowing incessantly in the direction of Village Cay marina and nearby places certainly complicated the strenuous efforts of fire fighters. Between 40 to 60 minutes later the fire had lessened in intensity and was gradually being contained. Meanwhile big, dark clouds of smoke had been blowing all over the urban area.
The owner of the structures devoured by the blaze, Mr. Bettito Frett is reported by Virgin Islands News Online to have received a telephone call at around 4 am.
Fire & Rescue firemen battled valiantly to contain the ferocious inferno and in the end succeeded to prevent it from spreading which would have caused immense damage to the entire area. The structures ravaged by the blaze include the Spaghetti Junction restaurant and the Tree House night club; a nearby business was also heavily damaged.
The cause of the fire has not been identified. The value of the properties involved is not known; some boats moored in the vicinity are said to have suffered some damage.
