In order to return to the Centrobasket tournament in August as one of the three teams from the 22nd CBC Championships here July 1-5, BVI Basketball Federation president Guy “The General” Malone said one of the teams in their zone they must beat is the U.S. Virgin Islands.

“I look at the 9 o’clock game on July 3 with the U.S. Virgin Islands as the championship game of the first round. We have a rivalry between us,” Malone noted in firing the first salvo.

“There are players on their team—Jason Edwin and I think his brother Deon—we miss out on those guys because they were born in the USVI. But, they are bred and grown right here in the BVI. They play on Legs (in our league) with Kennedy Bass and have played with Steve Parillon. Bass, Parillon, Leslee Smith and Kleon Penn are on the BVI team and they beat the USVI two years ago in Centrobasket in the Dominican Republic and it didn’t rest will with USVI president Usie Richards, so we are expecting big things from this game.”

Malone said he attended the recent FIBA Americas Congress in Puerto Rico and the trash talking began in earnest there between the USVI, BVI and the other countries. Malone said it would mean everything to beat the USVI at home.

“It’s important to beat them,” he said of the Group B matchup. “When you look to cross over to meet the other teams, one of the teams in Group A is Cuba who will send their very best. If and when we beat the U.S. Virgin Islands, it puts us in a good position to avoid playing Cuba for a position in the playoffs, that’s how important it is for the BVI to beat the U.S. Virgin Islands.”

The Men’s tournament will be followed by the 21st Women’s Tournament from July 8-12.
