Thursday, April 28 – Deputy Commissioner of Police Alwin James today issued a statement confirming that the remains found in Hawks Nest, Tortola are confirmed to be those of Nickera Smith who had been reported missing by her family on 29 January 2016.
“Forensic testing was conducted and the results were returned yesterday. The appointed Family Liaison Officer met with the family yesterday afternoon, advised them of the findings and offered condolences on behalf of the Force as support continues in what is a very difficult time. Today, we can now share with the public that the remains found are those of Nickera Smith,” the DCP said.
DCP James has confirmed that police are dealing with this matter as a murder enquiry and again appealed to any person who has information that could be helpful, no matter how trivial, to contact the Major Crime Team directly at 368-5682. Persons can also give that information to the RVIPF Intelligence Unit at 368-9339 or report the information anonymously to Crimestoppers through its Miami-based hotline number 800-TIPS (8477).
Nickera Smith was last seen on 27 January leaving her Hope Hill address. She was at the time wearing a black/grey jacket, stone-washed three-quarter length pants and sneakers.
