BVI to become member of CPU

Chief Minister the Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal is to attend a May 24-25 meeting of the Caribbean Postal Union in Curacao.
Post Mistress Mrs. Marilyn Richards, Post Office Project Coordinator David Bilkington and Ms. Cherrie Ortiz, Deputy Financial
Secretary will accompany him.

The meeting will be divided into two segments. A technical meeting will be held May 21-23 and the Ministerial meeting May 24-25.
The theme is “Liberalization and Sustainability of the Postal Sector in the Caribbean.” The objective of the Caribbean Postal Union 2001 conference is to create a clear picture of the direction of the postal service in the Caribbean against the background of the ongoing globalization.

The agenda for the Postmaster General will be to receive the report of the Secretary General, process direct activities of the CPU,
determine operational strategic action and draft resolutions for submission to Ministers. At the Ministers meeting, they will analyze and discuss the recommendations arising from the final report of the Post Master General’s meeting, discuss and reach decisions, look at postal reports and developments, discuss the strategic direction of the postal sector of the region and institutionalizing the Caribbean Postal Union.

Executive Council here has agreed that the BVI Postal Administration should become a full member of the Caribbean Postal Union
and that the annual contribution of $3,000 be paid for the years 1999, 2000 and 2001. Approval was also given by His Excellency
the Governor to exercise powers under section 19 of the Virgin Islands Constitution to authorize the Chief Minister to sign the
Convention establishing the Caribbean Postal Union.
