NDP MEMBERS REAFFIRM COMMITMENT TO THE PARTY & THE ELECTORATE

Member for the 8th District the Honourable Lloyd Black of the opposition National Democratic Party (NDP) has moved to dispel rumours of his impending switch of allegiance from the NDP to the ruling Virgin Islands Party (VIP). His comments came in a radio broadcast Monday night and in the wake of the resignation last week (Feb. 19th) of one of the party’s founding members, Hon. Mark Vanterpool, Rep. D4. Hon. Vanterpool indicated that he joined the government in order to more swiftly implement his development plan for the capital Road Town.

Rumours abounded since then about which other opposition member would follow suit. Hon. Black’s name was bandied around. However, he reassured his constituents and the general public that he had no such intention. “I join with my colleagues this evening to assure you of our continued support for Dr. the Honourable Orlando Smith, our leader of the National Democratic Party and our continued support for you, the people of the British Virgin Islands and the National Democratic Party,” he stated. “I want to make it abundantly clear that I’m committed to you, the people who have elected me, and to the National Democratic Party,” the Rep. for District 8 reiterated.

He emphasized his commitment to serving the BVI as Members of the Opposition and doing what’s in the best interest of the territory. He said the rumours are intended to sow seeds of discord and distrust among residents that there is a problem with the membership of the NDP. “Again, we want to assure you that we are a group who believes in principles, loyalty and commitment and are dedicated to serving you, the people of this territory.”

The radio programme also featured Leader of the Opposition Dr. the Honourable Orlando Smith and MP’s Hon. Dr. Kedrick Pickering, and Hon. Ronnie Skelton. They were bombarded for over two hours by telephone calls from listeners, supportive and otherwise, of the events of last week..
