STUDENTS RECEIVE PRIZES FOR ART EXTRAVAGANZA The winners of the Shell Antilles and Guianas Ltd./Department of Education and Culture sponsored art extravaganza 2000 have been commended for the high quality of work produced for the competition. They received their awards during a presentation ceremony at the Breezeway of the Central Administration Complex on Tuesday afternoon. Chairperson/Teacher/Parent Mrs. Valerie Lettsome said she was impressed with the artistic ability of the students. She congratulated all the children and also commended Shell and the Department of Education for sponsoring the competition. The competition was launched October 24th, 2000. Deputy Chief Education Officer Dr. Quincy Lettsome referred to the entries as fine, wonderful pieces of artwork, saying he said he could see that talents and creativity and suggested that there may be future artists among the group. He said the support by Shell of this competition translates into the companys support for children and education in general. Regional Manager for Shell Antilles and Guianas Ltd. Mr. Hector Samayoa said his company is committed to participating in activities where the entire community can benefit. Also, I would like to highlight that Shell is equally active in developing all type of activities relating to maintaining and protecting our environment as well as committed to develop business practices of health, education and safety which can be used for different activities in the BVI. Minister of Education and Culture the Honourable Andrew Fahie delivered the feature address. He pointed out that the competition was aimed at developing and promoting the artistic talents or abilities of local children and also to sensitize them to the importance of the environment and its preservation. This was indeed a worthwhile initiative and judging from the number of entries, it was one which has captured the interests of our children. He commended the Department of Education and the main sponsors Shell and American Eagle for providing cash prizes and the first prize award of a trip for two to St. Martin. I want to let the representatives that we are most appreciative of their willingness to join us in partnering ventures such as this and particularly in the interests that they are showing in helping us to encourage and develop our students artistic talents and simultaneously highlight important issues such as environmental protection here on our island. The Minister also commended the teachers and parents who assisted the children. He said he has always believed in partnering between the Ministry, Department of Education, the schools and the wider business community. The quality of artwork is testament to the fine work that is being carried out in our schools, Hon. Fahie stated. He singled out Cedar School for capturing the 1st and several of the other prizes and congratulated those Teachers in the public school system who have dedicated to making art an integral part of the students educational experience. He said he is aware that more can be done to improve art education in the territory, especially the availability of material, more advanced art programmes and teaching staff. The Education Minister said through art, children can learn
about the world. He said art provides a way for them to express
their thoughts and an important and effective tool for learning.
He said in the updated curriculum offerings, the Department would
be concentrating more on art education, in addition to information
technology, local history and culture and the performing arts. WINNERS:
