BVI TO HOST INT'L MEDICAL CONFERENCE FOR
THE 23RD YEAR
The British Virgin Islands will again play host to dozens
of medical practitioners from around the world at the 23rd annual
BVI Medical Conference. The event is carded for January 29th
to February 2nd, 2001 at the Prospect Reef Resort and will be
held under the theme "Healthcare Challenges".
The conference is sponsored by the Grand Rapids Medical Education
and Research Centre for Health Professions Continuing Medical
Education in Michigan USA in conjunction with the government
and the Medical Association of the BVI.
The annual BVI Medical Conference is relevant to all physicians.
The programme consists of a stimulating series of presentations
that address a multitude of topics organized by the Mayo Clinic,
Michigan State University, Saint Mary's Mercy Medical Centre,
Spectrum Health, University of Toronto and the University of
the West Indies.
This unique, well-established international conference attracts
outstanding medical lecturers from the world to provide an international
perspective. Registration is limited to 100 participants, who
will be able to discuss and identify advancements, improvements
and complications in various medical specialties.
The keynote speaker this year will be Sir Terence English, KBE,
DL, MA BSc, FRCP, FRCS. He was born in South Africa and educated
at Hilton College, Natal, studied medicine at Guy's Hospital
in Britain where he qualified and later specialized in cardiothoracic
surgery. He created the UK Cardiac Surgical Register in 1977
and performed Britain's first successful heart transplant in
1979.
BVI Governor His Excellency Frank Savage is down to address the
opening of the 23rd BVI Annual Medical Conference on January
29th. Chief Minister Honourable Ralph T. O'Neal and Minister
for Health and Welfare Hon. Ethlyn Smith will also deliver remarks.
Topics to be addressed throughout the conference include A Historical
Perspective of Cardiac Surgery 1955-2000; Domestic Violence -
Recognition and Prevention; How to Survive in Medicine in the
21st Century; Implications of the Genetics Revolution; Update
on Treating Nicotine Dependence; Hormone Replacement Therapy
and Breast Cancer Risk; Infectious Diseases; Pediatric Movement
Disorders; New Diseases for the New Millennium and Chronic Diseases
in the African Diaspora.
Dr. Frederick A. Coville of the Bougainvillea Clinic will present
on the Changes in the Delivery of Healthcare in the Caribbean.
