Public Holidays Review Committee established

A committee has been established to review the current list of public holidays, Chief Minister the Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal announced
Monday. Membership of the Public Holidays Review Committee was approved by Executive Council recently.
Membership will comprise of one person each from the H. L. Stoutt Community College Virgin Islands Studies Programme, the BVI Chamber
of Commerce and Hotel Association, the Ministry of Education and Culture, the National Youth Council, the BVI Bankers Association, the
Labour Department and one person each from the sister islands of Anegada, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke. There would also be a
representative from the small business community, a historian and the Chief Information Officer as members of the committee.
The terms of reference are as follows: “Having regard to the cultural and historical significance of public holidays and to the economic costs
thereof to the territory, to review the current list of statutory holidays and make recommendations for changes in the list, on the understanding
that the overall number of holidays should not be increased and to report by 31st March 2001.”
Chief Minister O’Neal said the review would encompass all holidays, without special focus on any particular day. “We hope that this committee
will soon get down to business.”
There are currently about 13 public holidays in the territory.
