Territory mourns death of former Legislator & Speaker The British Virgin Islands has lost a most illustrious son former Legislator and Speaker of the House, Mr. Ivan Dawson, OBE, CBE. He departed this life on Sunday, 22 April, at 5:50 pm at his home in the company of his family and friends. Mr. Dawson was 87. The date of the funeral is tentatively scheduled for Saturday 5 May at the Road Town Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the Cane Garden Bay Cemetery. More detailed information will be disseminated next week. A friend of all and a highly respected statesman, Ivan Dawson was born on Tortola in 1914. He was elected by the Second District in 1957, and was re-elected in 1960 and 1963. He became the Member for Trade and Production in 1964, and was re-elected, under the Ministerial System, in 1967 and held the post of Minister for Agriculture. During this period he also served as Deputy Chief Minister, a position he held until his resignation in 1971. Subsequently, Mr. Dawson served as
a nominated member of Council (1971-1975), and was elected Speaker
of the BVI Legislature from 1975 to 1983, when he retired officially
from public life. He continued to remain involved in community
and social projects. His willingness to assist people caused
him to accept service in the Methodist Church as Pastor for two
years and over 40 years in other services to the Church. In 1991
the Cane Garden Bay Primary School was renamed the Ivan Dawson
Primary School. |
