NEW SHOPPING MALL AND OFFICE COMPLEX OPENS IN ROAD TOWN
Dr. Quincy Lettsome and his wife Mrs. Kirlin Lettsome are the proud owners of a brand new building on Wickhamís Cay in Road Town, Tortola, which goes a long way to enhance the physical setting of the capital and the commercial capability of the British Virgin islands. The formal opening of the ìQuastisky Buildingî was held Friday 8th December at the market/round-a-bout location. The ceremony was chaired by Mr Elihu Rhymer and the dedication performed by Reverend E. Brissett, Superintendent of the Methodist Church, the scripture reading done by son Sym Lettsome and the welcome done by Mrs. Lettsomeís niece Mrs. Daphne OíNeal. Mrs. O'Neal said this was a very special moment bringing to an end two years of construction. There were some periods in time when some of us did wonder if the building would ever get completed. However, the indomitable spirit and perseverance of Dr. Lettsome and his partner Kirlin have brought us to this happy occasion. The Quastisky Building will house the Conservation and Fisheries Department on the lower and third levels, a shopping mall consisting of six stores and one deli on the second main level and the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force on the 4th level. This beautiful building is an indication of the continued commercial growth of our town and our islands. In providing an overview, proprietor Dr. Quincy Lettsome pointed out that buying and selling have become second nature to himself and his wife. He said they both came from families that were business oriented. Many in the family line answered the call to be shopkeepers, bakers, butchers, seamstresses, farmers, sailors and captains. ìIíd like to view the erection of this building as bringing togtether several aspects of our family traditions and historical events.î Dr. Lettsome recalled approaching the then Honourable Alban Anthony back in 1977 about acquiring a plot of land on Wickhamís Cay, which was managed then by Mr. Betteto Frett. He said after completing his Ph.D studies in 1990, his family decided that it was time to invest on the Cay. However, circumstances forced them to hold off for a while until the late mid 1990ís, when the BVI economy became vibrant, propelled by the tri-pillars of offshore banking, tourism and construction. ìWe decided that the economy was booming enough to support such a venture. Scotia Bank agreed to finance the project and in mid 1998, they began to secure leases and started construction. It proved to be quite a challenge indeed, but at last, here we are under the shadows of this magnificent edifice.î The proprietor expressed thanks to God, his family and the workmen. He singled out architect Kelvin Frett, contractors James Frett and himself, foremen Alfredo Frett and Joseph Nisbett, sub-contractor responsible for electricity Elroy Liburd, Todman and Todman Airconditioning, Boynes Welding, Alvin Turnbull Plumbing, Paul Wattley who inspected the property periodically and liased between the bank and the contractor and Morris Lettsome for monitoring the expenditure of the project. Dr. Lettsome also acknowledged the role played by the Survey Department, Wickhamís Cay Development Authority and Mr. Louis Potter of the Town and Country Planning Department, as well as the BVI government. Mr. Lloyd Black of Scotiabank administered the loan. Historically, this building is part of the saga of the previous Wickhamís Cay and Anegada gareement. To this end, Dr. Lettsome said his family would like to appreciate and acknolwedge Mr. Noel Lloyd and the members of Positive Action Movement as well as the British government. Minister of Education and Culture the Honourable Andrew Fahie delivered remarks at the grand opening. He congratulated the family on this accomplishment, saying that the building has indeed added to the aesthetic quality of the market area. ìThis large beautiful building is a testimony of our peopleís confidence in our economy and your Virgin Islands Party government...and also a testimony to the dedication of Dr. Lettsome and his family towards excellence.He concurred with remarks made by Dr. Lettsome in acknowledging the efforts of Positive Action Movement for helping to regain Wickhamís Cay and further challenged the Lettsome family to consider a similar venture in East End. Doc, as a member of my Ministry of Education and Culture family, I extend my personal congratulations once again and I want to assure you that you and your family have my best wishes for a successful business venture into the future. The vote of thanks was given by Mrs. Kirlin Lettsome, who also cut the
ribbon. A fashion show by Impressions, one of the stores in the Quastisky
Building, followed. | |||
