SALT ISLAND STAMPS WIN 1998 STAMP POPULARITY POLL
For the third time in British Virgin Islands annals the BVI Philatelic Society has announced the winners of the Stamp Popularity Poll. The response to the poll published by The Island Sun newspaper on 20 February 1999 was at least 30 per cent higher than in the past - a clear indication that BV Islanders and residents carefully examine the stamps they use on their mail. The poll also is a means of letting the local Postal Authorities know what the public thinks about the stamps issued by the Post Office. The announcement of the results of the 1998 Stamp Popularity Poll was made at the closing ceremony of the 8th Annual Stamp Exhibition at Barclays Bank, Road Town, on Sunday May 2nd. BVI Philatelic Society president, Dr. Giorgio Migliavacca expressed hissatisfaction in announcing that the Salt Island set of stamps [Island Profiles series] had been deemed by the public the Best Design for 1998. The Worst Design, gave thumbs down to the Underwater Life set of four stamps and one miniature sheet. The first runner-up for Best Design was the set of stamps highlighting the BVI Festival. This set was the offshoot of the Design a Stamp competition where students of all ages present their deigns on a given theme. The competition is sponsored by Barclays Bank and is a joint effort of the BVI Postal Authorities, the Department of Education & Culture and the BVI Philatelic Society. The theme for the 1999 Design a Stamp competition will be "ìsland Music". The Most Important stamp issue of 1998 was the Anniversaries set celebrating BVI-born Dr. John Coackley Lettsom and the 225th Anniversary of the British Medical Society which he founded, the 30th Anniversary of Comprehensive Education in the BVI, and the 50th Anniversary of theUniversity of the West Indies.
