Game Fish and Drake Win 1997 BVI Stamp Popularity Poll Winners of the 1997 British Virgin Islands Stamp Popularity Poll are the Souvenir Sheet for the 420th Anniversary of Sir Francis Drake' Voyage (Best Design of the Year) and the 1997 Game Fish Definitive Series (Most Important issue of the Year). Second position for Best Design was earned by the Orchids quartet with its complement of a miniature sheet; runner up in the Most Important Issue segment was the Sir Francis Drake Souvenir Sheet with a rococo frame enclosing 12 stamps. As for the bad news " the Least Necessary Issue of 1997 was the Hong Kong 97 Stamp Show miniature sheet which also got thumbs down in the Worst Design of the Year segment. The Poll was published in The Island Sun newspaper on 16 May 1998. The ballots were utilized for a prize draw and the winners are: Jo Warner (1997 BVI Year Set) and Myrtle Reese (one year subscription to The Island Sun). A similar poll was held last year. The results of the 98 poll were announced by BVI Philatelic Society president, Dr Giorgio Migliavacca at the 7th Annual BVI Stamp Exhibition held 20-21 June at Barclays Bank, Tortola. The poll is under the auspices of the BVI Philatelic Society. |
