In support of the Virgin Gorda Cancer Society on Saturday in the second race of the 20th Highland Spring College Classic Series, Emrol Amsterdam led a field of 60 participants through the streets of the Valley, Virgin Gorda as they ran for a cause.

While Amsterdam crossed the line in 12 minutes and 26 seconds as the first finisher, organizers were happy with the turnout that doubled the number of participants in the first race.

“The second race was a really good event,” race director Stephanie Russ Penn said. “It was almost hindered by rain, but the rains didn’t stop the effort. It was a great turnout with persons also coming out for Cancer awareness as it was a joint venture with Virgin Gorda branch of the Cancer Society. We had over 60 strong that went out despite the rain and it was a good event.”

Russ Penn said Amsterdam ran uncontested as his main rival Curwin Andrews was absent. Raw Skillz Track Club’s Britney Peters—a Soccer goalie—was the first woman in the open division, covering the course in 15:57, but J’Sally O’Neal, running in the Cross Country segment for Harrigan House was the first female finisher in 15:37.

“We had a great event,” Russ Penn stated. “We had a good turnout for the cause and as the month continues, we look forward to the other activity coming up on Oct 24 on Tortola, as it relates to World Polio Day. This is in conjunction with the Rotary Clubs of the BVI. We are inviting the community out to participate in this worthy cause. This event will lead to the wrapping up of the Virgin Gorda series on Nov 7 and the Tortola leg on Nov 14.”
