GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES
NEW YEAR HONOUR
His
Excellency Governor David Pearey has announced the appointment of Mr. Ashford
Frett as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
The appointment
was made by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as part of her New Years Honours
List.
Mr. Ashford
Frett, as he approaches retirement in 2007, has given 33 years of strong service
to the community, 20 of those as Superintendent of Prisons. During this time the
prison service in the British Virgin Islands has evolved from a small prison
holding a hand-full of prisoners into a service catering for many categories of
prisoners. Mr. Frett has had to steer the prison through these changes, coping
at times (especially before the construction of the new prison in 1997) with
inadequate premises and with serious problems of overcrowding.
Mr. Frett has
provided outstanding leadership in his years as Superintendent. He continues to
embrace new policies, creating a positive yet firm prison regime. He has
approached the many problems of a challenging position with calmness and
dedication.
The Governor
expressed his personal congratulations to Mr. Frett for a most deserving honour
recognising a distinguished and long career in the prison service.
