TERRITORY’S NEWEST CENTENARIAN RECEIVES VISIT FROM LEADERS

Chief Minister Dr Hon D Orlando Smith presents cheque to BVI centenarian Cecil Georges; his wife Elaine Georges looks on

On 26 October, Chief Minister Honourable Dr. D. Orlando Smith and Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Finance, Health, and Social Development Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton  joined family, friends, and well wishers celebrating the birthday of the Territory’s newest centenarian.

Mr. Cecil Georges who resides on Main Street, Tortola, turned 100 years old on October 26.

As is customary, the Chief Minister gave Mr. Georges a goodwill gift of $5,000 on behalf of the Government. The Deputy Chief Minister also presented a gift basket to Mr. Georges.

The Chief Minister commended Mr. Georges for staying in good health and for being active, despite his many years. “I want to congratulate you for reaching 100 in such great condition,” the Chief Minister said, adding that even today he still observes Mr. Georges taking regular walks along Main Street.

“My first memory of Mr. Georges was when I visited his business in upper Road Town, which was a centre of commerce; I was probably 12 or 13 years old at the time,” the Chief Minister told a small gathering at the Georges’ home last evening.

Deputy Chief Minister Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton also extended congratulations to Mr. Georges for reaching 100 and recognised his good physical health and activeness.

“When I saw Mr. Georges walking along the Waterfront Drive recently, I thought he was 90 years old until I was later told he is making 100. To be still walking the streets at 100 is remarkable,” the Deputy Chief Minister said in extending congratulations to the centenarian.

Mr. Georges joins five other persons who are currently 100 years or older in the Territory. They are Ms. Isabella Morris of Carrot Bay, who was born on October 6, 1900; Ms. Eliza Amelia Turnbull of Round Hill, who was born on February 19, 1901; Ms. Constantia Callwood of the Adina Donovan Home for the Elderly, who was born on March 5, 1905; and Ms. Viva George of the Valley, Virgin Gorda, who was born on December 12, 1904.
