Former Governor dies at 82
As of press time we learn that former British Virgin Islands Governor Walter
Wilkinson Wallace, CVO, CBE, DSO died over the weekend in England. He was BVI
Governor from July 1974 to October 1978, and the 1977 Silver Jubilee Royal Visit
took place during his tenure.
He returned to the BVI in 1993 as member of the Constitutional Commission; the
other members were former BVI Deputy Governor, Mr. Alford Penn and Montserrat’s
Speaker of the House Dr. Howard Fergus. At the time he expressed his views on
constitutional advancement and greater autonomy for the Territory. During an
interview aired by ZBVI, Wallace indicated that if most powers were removed from
the Governor, then it would have been as if the BVI was looking for
independence.
In recent years Wallace wrote a book that will be published in the not too
distant future.
The funeral is scheduled for Tuesday 25 October at 11 am at the Chichester
Crematorium.
