BVI athletes heading to Antigua after celebrating World Athletics Day

BY DEAN GREENAWAY

After helping the BVI Amateur Athletic Association celebrate the International Athletics Federation’s World Athletics Day on Saturday at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds, just over 20 athletes will compete in the weekend Leeward Islands Jr. track and field championships in Antigua.

The World Athletics Day competition was also used to select athletes for the Central American and Caribbean Age Group Championships in the Dominican Republic at the end of June.

Ileta Potter, World Athletics Day event coordinator said the objectives were met in the 10-11 and 12-13 age groups who were trying out for selection to represent the BVI at next month’s Central American and Caribbean Age Group Championships.

She said things in the Under 20 and Under 17 divisions also went smoothly.

Association president Ephraim Penn said the event was to showcase athletes between 16-17 years and younger, as the IAAF focused on specific age groups trying to encourage young athletes to get involved in the sport of track and field. “The performances were pretty good overall, especially in the boy’s under 17, 100 meters, where Akeel Borrows beat Michael Butler in a photo finish,” Penn said. “They ran some decent times. We saw improvements in most of the athletes. Overall, it was a good experience for them.”

Penn said there were some unusual events targeting 10-11 and 12-13 groups. “Some of them had to do unfamiliar distances and we have seen them rising to the occasion running in events they don’t compete in and doing well,” he said. “It shows that overall, even that team is going to be a very good team.”

While there weren’t surprises Potter said Donte Blair who competed in a Primary School soccer match before the meet made an impression. “He made a good showing in the 12-13 boys age group,” she noted. “He wasn’t practicing with us, but I guess with some practices, he might improve within the events he competed in.”

Potter said the area of focus now will be on the distances which she described as ‘weak.’ She said the team is very good in the jumps and the ball throwing events are alright. During Saturday’s competition, hurdles were also introduced for the first time. Potter said most of the students they were looking at attacked the hurdles quite reasonably. “We have some work to do on how they run the hurdles, because you can see some of them jumping the hurdles instead of running,” she explained. “But, with time and practice, if they stick with it, those that we have to work with, they will improve.”
