VG Concerned Citizens circulate Petition

VIRGIN GORDA ---- In recent weeks a group of Virgin Gorda citizens have met to form an ad hoc committee regarding the reported impending closing of the Virgin Gorda airport. These concerned citizens represent a wide cross-section of the community and include belongers, long time residents, business people, resort managers, homeowners, potential investors, repeat visitors, and many others.

The informal meetings have served to share collective concerns in order to ascertain consensus in this citizen participation effort to formulate viable options which might be available to the general public in the event that it is demonstrated that the current owner of the airport intends to close the facility in the foreseeable future.

Concerns expressed thus far by the group have focused on rapid medical evacuation contingencies, tourism access, the timely delivery of essential goods and perishable foods, and the overall benefits provided to the public by an established airport.

A petition, produced by the committee “Save the Virgin Gorda Airport”, is now in circulation and is intended to make all residents aware of the situation and to allow for their opinion to be expressed. This petition is available at many Virgin Gorda retail outlets, as well as through individuals involved with this issue.

The group has stated strongly that they have no political agenda, and look forward to the constructive participation of any and all citizens who would like to be heard on this matter.
