Jr. Rockers snatch Big Ballers crown from Jr. Mystics

The East End Long Look Jr. Rockers overcame an 11-point fourth quarter deficit to beat the Virgin Gorda Jr. Mystics, 84-82, last Friday night, to win the BVI Big Ballers league division title in their match up at the Multipurpose Sports Complex, which attracted the largest crowd of the league.

“It was a beautiful game. They had my back against the wall, but, I wasn’t nervous,” said Jr. Rockers coach Andricito ‘Cito’ Smith. “I know my men. We play with pride—East End Long Look pride. We have a lot of it and nobody is going to come from off island and beat us here. They tried and I congratulate them. They put up a good fight but I came out on top.”

Tad Martin, who combined with Travis Malone for 20 fourth quarter points to carry the Jr. Rockers, was held scoreless in the third quarter, before taking his game inside to score 12 of his 22 points—including seven straight that triggered the stretch run. The Jr. Rockers overcame the Jr. Mystics’ 11-point-66-55, deficit with 7 minutes and 44 seconds left, to tie the game at 77-77, after Martin scored off a turnover by the Mystics’ Triston Creque. Malone scored six of his eight fourth quarter points in the last minute of the game and finished with 23. Curt Rabsatt and Garvin Frett had 13 and 12 points each, while Lester Smith tossed in seven points, to go with nine blocks and 12 rebounds.

Jr. Mystics’ Travis Issacs, the game two hero whose 3-pointer with 0.1 second left gave them a 77-75, win to force game three, said the game got away in the fourth quarter where he scored 15 of his 25 points. “We kept making stupid turnovers and the Rockers kept scoring,” noted Issacs who also had eight rebounds and eight steals, but his squad had five turnovers and the Jr. Rockers converted them to help their final run. “Every time they got the ball, they scored and made it hard for us and we couldn’t do anything about it.” Leandon Creque tossed in 15, while Tristin Creque had 12 points and 12 rebounds. Keith Burroughs had a 13 point 12 board double, double with four blocks.

Before the junior division championship game, Devon Watts and Gary Hillhouse netted 16 and 15 of their respective 30 and 28 points in the third quarter as the Sr. Mystics routed Last Minute, 117-64. Watts and Hillhouse snatched 16 and 10 rebounds respectively. Garvin Stevens finished with 18 points 10 rebounds and four assists. Bruce Davis and Keithroy Farrell tossed in 12 and 10 points each. Jerry Martin and Jamie Hopkins were Last Minute’s leading scorers with 22 and 20 points a piece.

Brian ‘Bash’ Brewley had 28 points, 10 rebounds and eight steals, and Glenroy Jennings added 14 points, in leading the Rejects to a 93-65 victory over Nuttin 2 Do. Keon Edwards was Nuttin 2 Do top scorer with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Aldric Lans added 18.

David ‘Bolo’ Lettsome scored 30 of his 32 points in the third and fourth quarters after missing the early part of the game, to carry the streaking East Rockers past Millennium, 109-88, for their eight straight victory. Lettsome who had 10 rebounds, was joined in double figures by Brent Henry with 21 points and five assists; Dwayne Penn, 15 points, 17 boards, along with four blocks and four assists. Melvin Christopher, in his first game thus avoiding a team forfeit, added 10 points. Gary Smith had a season’s best 34 points for Millennium, with 18 of them in the first quarter. Leon Wheatley narrowly missed a triple double with 21 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. Alfred Lettsome and Akiba Forde dropped in 15 and 10 points each.

Off De Chainz handed division leading Disciples and 80-76, setback, after outscoring them 10-1, in the last 1 minute and 17 seconds of their Saturday night game The Disciples returned on Sunday night to whip the Apostles, 107-75.

With the score tied 75-75, the Disciples made three crucial turnovers in the last 30 seconds of the contest to lose the game. Roger Farrington led Off De Chainz with 23 points. Dalvern Blyden who scored the winning basket, had an 18 point 11 rebounds double double, with five steals and three assists. Samuel France pulled 13 rebounds and tossed in eight points. Devon Smith had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Disciples. Ronford Todman and Clifton Corum added 12 points each.

Winston Farrington had 47 points—30 of them coming in the second and third quarters— as the Disciples rebounded to beat the Apostles 107-75. Farrington also had eight rebounds and dished out five assists. Wayne Campbell dropped in 20 points, snatched 14 rebounds and grabbed five steals. Todman had a 17 point 14 rebound double and dished out seven assists. Marcus Harley narrowly missed a double double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Nicholas Laurac had 12 of his 20 points in the third quarter to lead the Apostles. Tyron Tyson chipped in 14 points and Roger Phillip 12 and 10 rebounds. Trevor Davis grabbed 15 boards and pitched in six points.

The BVIEC Shockers pulled out a 102-98, victory over the East Sonics in the last 15.6 seconds to break a 98-98 tie, when Ronnie Simmonds dished out a pass to Trevor Gumbs who was fouled in the act of shooting, resulting in an and one. Simmonds had a seasons best 44 points. Brian Blyden had his second successive triple double with 17 points, 15 rebounds and 14 assists. Gumbs pulled 20 rebounds and poured in nine points. Tori King added an 11 point 12 rebound double double.

Ephraim Gordon had 30 points for the East Sonics—making eight of 10-3-pointers. He also pulled 18 rebounds off the glass. Vince Pickering followed up with 28 points and eight rebounds.

The Fryers held off the Rebels 93-84, behind Keith Smith’s 30 points—20 of them came in the second and third quarters. He also had nine rebounds and four blocks. Caleb Liburd contributed 26 points with eight steals and five assists. Karl Scatliffe finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Reynaldo Smith and Jamal Todman were the Rebels’ leading scorers with 24 and 18 points.

Keyon Thomas led the Bad Boys past the Guns, 112-86, with his 27 points and eight rebounds. Roger Frank poured in 25 points to go with 10 rebounds and seven assists. Keito Canton another 17, while Recardo Farrington had a 15 point 13-rebound double with eight assists. Guns’ Kyle Scatliffe has 15 of his 25 points in the second half. He also grabbed 15 rebounds. Kamai Anthony tossed in 14 points and pulled 10 rebounds.
