Veterans lead string of shutouts in BVI Football Association play

BY DEAN GREENAWAY

Veterans beat Connections 5-0 in leading a string of shutouts at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds in BVI Football Association Soccer league action over the weekend, with four of five games ending in shut outs.

After playing to a scoreless half, Veterans got second half goals from five different scorers to defeated Connections 5-0. Veterans’ goals came in quick sequence from Garnet Ferron in the 52nd and 54th minutes with Fitzroy Thomas making it 3-0 four minutes later. Coy Robinson added the fourth score in the 74th minute while Sherwin Peters rounded out the scoring one minute later.

The HBA Panthers handed defending champion Old Madrid their second successive loss in a 2-0 victory. After playing to a scoreless half, Carlos Southerland and Mondale Questette had goals in the 67th and 84th minutes respectively for the victory.

Chesley Miller had a hat trick in leading Virgin Gorda to a 6-0 trashing of the VP Wolves. Striker Jairo Morris had his first of two goals 16 minutes into the game to give Virgin Gorda a 1-0 lead halftime lead over the Wolves. Virgin Gorda dominated the second half with a series of attacks as Mervin Dainty made it 2-0 in the 55th minute. Miller began work on his hat trick that came within a six minute span after scoring in the 75th minute for a 3-0 edge. Miller added other goals in the 80th and 82nd minutes. Morris missed several earlier scoring opportunities but capped off his scoring two minutes later for the 6-0 victory.

In a match that was conducted in a friendlier atmosphere rather than the usual rivalry as both teams are managed by national coach Patrick Mitchell, Valencia 1 used Shervon Russell’ hat trick to tame Valencia 2 by a 5-2 score. Valencia 1 grabbed the lead 35 minutes into the game with a goal from striker Dwayne Ross, who added a second goal in the 42nd stanza. Russell had the first of his three scores one minute later for a 3-0 halftime edge. Valencia 2 closed the deficit to 3-1 when Gregory James rifled a shot past the goalie in the 51st minute. Russell however, scored again in the 73rd and 84th to record his first hatrick of the season. James netted his second goal one minute before the close of play.

In the lone female match, the HBA Panthers defeated their Virgin Gorda counterparts 1-0. Nicole Wheatley scored the lone.
