Darwn Peters improves on College Classic Series record

BY DEAN GREENAWAY

Unlike on Virgin Gorda where all the defending champions lost their opening race a week ago, all the champions in the Tortola leg of the Highland Spring College Classic Series were victorious.

Darwn Peters, the two time women’s defending champ began the series by smashing her 2-year old course record with a time of 13 minutes, 48.4 seconds, eclipsing her mark of 13:56.1 from 2002. Men’s champ Linden Peters had the day’s fastest time of 12:26.4 to win.

Peters who placed eight overall among all divisions, said unlike past races, she had been preparing this year and felt good about the results. “I kind of went out with 13:40 in mind, but I think I did very well and I’m pleased,” said Peters who drew strength from running with Rowan Victor, one of the BVI High School cross country runners. “There were some other men who tired to speed up when they saw me coming. Some held their sides, but it managed to take most of them out.” Peters said she can only get better as this is the first time she has prepared for the series. “I’m going to keep doing that,” she noted. “If I’m running 13 now, by the end of the series I should get pretty close to 11.”

Assistant race director Stephanie Russ Penn said she was happy to get the series off after rains wiped out the September 18 race. “We had about 177 participants in all our categories and we are already seeing some heated rivalries beginning with the open 2 mile and the schools and service clubs. We had the national Volleyball Association members out ahead of their upcoming OECS Championships and we are looking more associations to come out as teams.”

Penn said the series has started off with an anticipation of exciting. “If we are starting off this good and still have four more races to complete the Tortola series, you can only expect that if people continue training, the times will drop,” She explained. “We are going to have some major shattering of old records and I’m looking forward to seeing that happen.”

In the Cross Country category, defending champions the Rotary Club of Tortola narrowly pulled out a one point 31-30 victory over upset minded Rotary Club of Road Town.

Defending BVI High School inter-house champions Carlisle received a stiff challenge from upstart Lettsome to win by four points 36-40. Even in a rebuilding year, the Primary Schools division perennial champions Althea Scatliffe fielded a young squad and secured a victory over Enis Adams who only fielded four athletes as both recorded 25 points.

The next race on Tortola is scheduled for October 30. The series continues at 7 a.m. in Virgin Gorda this weekend.
