Two College Classic Series records
fall in penultimate race
BY DEAN GREENAWAY
Ahead of this
weekend’s season ender, two records fell in Saturday’s fourth Highland Spring
College Classic Series race, which returned to its original course, following
successive races on an alternate course because of the recent rains.
Defending
women’s champion Darwn Peters lowered her course record of 13 minutes, 48.4
seconds set six weeks ago on October 9, to 13:42.1 seconds, while the BVI High
School’s Rasheed Richards of Carlisle House lowered his Cross Country mark of
12:19.2 on from October 27, 2002, to 12:12.4.
“We had some
records broken today and we were able to go back to our original course, thanks
to Public Works Department for improving it from the conditions it has been in
because of all the rains,” noted assistant race director Stephanie Russ Penn.
“As far as today’s race goes, the numbers were small, but, the people who have
been consistently coming showed up and we’re really thankful. It was a good race
and I’m looking forward to an exciting finale on Nov. 27.”
Peters, who
wasn’t at her best in her last outing, said the first mile was tough. “I won’t
say I wasn’t fit, but I thing I went up to the mile mark kind of slow, but once
I rounded the cone, that’s the point where I picked up and kept the pace going
from there,” she explained.
Montessori
School’s Kitty Hasted tightened her grip on the girls’ one mile division leading
a girls’ sweep in the division with a time of 8 minutes 00.2 seconds. Lettsome
House showed that consistency pays by recording its second successive victory in
the BVI High School Cross Country division with one race left. Defending
champions Carlisle and Lincoln Houses have each recorded a victory.
As she has been
stressing prior to the series, Penn said consistency will play a factor when
awards are handed out at the end of the series. “I’ve started doing the
standings and I have a fair idea of each category in terms of who are in the
running for getting the overall medal as well as the top medal for each age
group. There’s a lot of categories that at the end of the day, the outcome—the
person who wins—it will come down to consistency. For some people, today could
well be the deciding factor whether they become the division winner for that
category because they have been consistent.”
An awards
ceremony will be held after Saturday’s final race, which begins at 7 a.m.
Registration convenes at 6:15 a.m.
