 Walters stops Anslem in BVI Closed Tennis Championships

Sheldon Walters ended Dion Anslem’s reign at the BVI Closed Tennis Championships Monday, with a straight set 7-6 and 6-4 victory at the Tortola Sports Club in Pasea. Carol Mitchell defended her title also with a straight set 6-3 and 6-2 win over Magrille Wilburn.  Walters ousted Ken Adamson—the tournament’s oldest player—in the semis following a 6-1 and 6-0 triumph, after beating Percy Rhoden 6-1 and 6-1. Anslem who had a bye to start the tournament, beat Richie Redding 6-1 and 6-3 after getting a walk over from Shan Mohamid when rains interrupted the match in which he led 5-1. Mitchell stopped Wilburn, after beating Fiona Harris 6-0 and 6-0 to defend her women’s crown. Wilburn advanced to the title game after stopping Heather Chapman 6-2 and 6-3 and Julie Elliott 6-1 and 6-0.  Damien Pearson beat Keith Thomas 6-3 and 6-4 for the men’s plate title while Caroline Bubiou stopped Julie Elliott 6-2 and 6-0 for the women’s plate. Joe Chapman beat Stuart Jennings 9-7 for the junior division crown.
