St. Thomas runner extends streak
in College Classic Series
BY DEAN
GREENAWAY
A 17-year-old
female sensation from St. Thomas extended her winning streak at Saturday’s
Highland Spring College Classic Series on Tortola.
Ivanna Eudora
Kean’s Aniecia Williams had a winning time of 12 minutes, 35.3 seconds to finish
seventh overall among the 115 participants in all divisions—including beating
women’s champ Darwn Peters who wasn’t at her best on race day.
The victory
for the Kean junior came during a busy week for the young runner. On Thursday
she won the US Virgin Islands High Schools Cross Country Championships in St.
Croix, after winning last Tuesday’s championships on St. Thomas.
Kean’s coach
Mario Toussaint said he brought his team to the race because they need
competition. “Competition is the greatest thing of all and having to practice
and not having any competition to me it’s useless,” Toussaint said. “Tortola
always supports us in our track meets and in the future we plan to do the same.
Whatsoever it is we’ll be over here to participate. The turnout today was great.
I see 100 or more participating in the event—old and young. It was very
impressive.”
Williams said
the course wasn’t as difficult as she first thought. “After the first lap I got
the hang of it and said ‘OK this is the course. I can do this, take it out here’
and realized where I could push it more as to where I can relax and that’s
basically what I tried to do,” Williams explained. She said she tried pushing
the pace in preparation for Tuesday’s Turkey Trot, her last cross country meet
on St. Thomas. “I want to break 20 minutes and try to get into the 19s,” said
Williams whose best is 20:35. “I figured I’ll run hard to get in shape to break
the 20 minutes.”
Lettsome threw
the BVI High School Cross Country division into a three way tie with their first
victory and the highest score of any winner with 66 points, beating last race
winner Lincoln and defending champions Carlisle. Lincoln and Carlisle each only
fielded two runners and Flemming did not compete.
In a head to
head duel with the BVI High School, Kean placed its five runners in the top
eight to score 22 points to their counterparts who had 35. “I told all our
students in the houses about this event, but when I went to pick some of them
up, I didn’t find anyone,” Clifton Forbes said. “But, it was really nice having
Euroda Kean coming over and participating in this event.”
Todman said
his team is in a rebuilding process after losing six seniors to graduation.
“Kean always
has good runners,” he noted. “Now we have Aniecia a future star. Among the
sprinters we have Kian Jon Babtiste, Dereka Conor and many others who will
continue.”
The Rotary
Club of Road Town’s had 23 points to their Rotary Club of Tortola counterparts
37. Although short handed, Althea Scatliffe Primary School hanged on to its
Primary Schools Cross Country lead with a victory over Enis Adams and
Montessori, with Francis Lettsome fielding two participants. Linden and Darwn
Peters—no relation—ran unchallenged to easily win the men’s and women’s
divisions with times of 11 minutes, 11.29.0 and 13 minutes, 05.4 seconds
respectively.
“I say thank
you to everyone who came out because despite the consistent rainy weather we’ve
been having this season, we still managed to have over 100 people coming out to
the race and everyone was excited and went out and did their best,” Assistant
race director Stephanie Russ Penn noted. “It was a great race. It was really
wonderful that Eudora Kean brought up their cross country team. They came out
with a vengeance and they ran very well. We look forward to them coming out and
participating anytime in the future.”
The next race
in the series is set for 7 a.m. on Saturday. Registration begins at 6:15 a.m.
The series finale and awards ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 27.
