Two College Classic Series champs fall on Virgin Gorda

BY DEAN GREENAWAY

Two of the three Highland Spring College Classic Series champions failed to successfully defend their titles in the Virgin Gorda leg of the series that ended last Saturday.

Bregado Flax Educational Center’s Primary and High School Cross Country Division champs Panthers and Rhymer Houses finished third and second respectively, as the Stallions and Harrigan Houses walked of with the crowns.

In the men’s open race, Maxford Pipe won the showdown with Nicholas Laurac to become the only repeat champion. Pipe became a 3-peat winner with a six-seconds victory over Laurac, a former champ who beat him in the opening race. He had a winning time of 11 Minutes 12.2 seconds to Laurac’s 11:18.1. Lyndon Massicott placed third in 12:19.2.

“I think Nick was a very good competitor, he ran very well and it was good for both of us,” Pipe said of the final race. “I enjoyed it more than the other two races. But, I was trying to keep a little bit back in the tank, so that when I reached to the finish if he intended to sprint to the finish, I would be there with him to come down and win the race.”

Laurac agreed the race was a good one. “The start was good but coming home I faltered. He caught me off guard. He did some interval sprints coming back and that worked me a bit,” Laurac explained. “At the finish he went all out and I tried to keep up with him but he got the upper hand.”

Bregado Flax Educational Center’s Primary division Shervon Anthony led his Stallions team to victory with a record time of 13 minutes, 08.9 seconds.

In the one-mile girls division, Makeida Fahie picked up where her sister Ebony left off by winning the division. Fahie recorded a series best 8 minutes 52.5 seconds in Saturday’s finale, improving her best by 7 minutes. Jonathan Christie, with a time of 11 minutes 14.8 seconds won the one mile boys division.

Assistant Race Director Stephanie Russ Penn said the three races on Virgin Gorda went very well. “We have two new champions in the Primary and Secondary divisions of the Cross Country Championships, we have a three time winner in the overall male as well,” Penn noted. “But, I can say, as usual, consistency pays off. If you stay consistent usually at the end of the day, you will come out on top.”

Penn lauded the Bregado Flax Educational Center Primary and High School divisions for bringing out their teams. She said some houses did a better job than each other but they all participated. “For the most part they were all represented. For next season, I would encourage more of the community members to come out and participate in the open race. But even there, the turnout was still good.”

Penn thanked the Valley Sound Lions Club who have been a bedrock of the series, providing volunteers and other assistance. “Without them, I don’t know what we would do,” Penn said. “I take this opportunity to publicly thank them and we look forward to working with them in the future.”
