Another champ falls in College Classic Series

BY DEAN GREENAWAY

For defending BVI High School Cross Country champs Carlisle, their 11-race winning streak is over. Thanks to Lincoln, who beat them for the first time by placing all its scorers in the top 10, for a comfortable seven point 27-34 win in Saturday’s second Highland Spring College Classic Series races on Tortola.  With both teams tied at 1-1, it becomes a best of three showdown for the title when the series resumes on November 13.

“Lincoln came out with a vengeance today,” assistant race director Stephanie Russ Penn said, noting that Lettsome only fielded three participants and placed third while Flemming had one runner. “Again numbers (of participants) really help out,” Penn reiterated. “Numbers create full teams and that consistency can be what ultimately determines who win at the end of the day.” Carlisle wasn’t the only defending champ to settle for second place. Kitty Halstead beat her Montessori schoolmate and defending champ Yasmin Rufflesmith for the first time, to win the girls one mile race in a swift 7 minutes and 35.4 seconds.

Following the Rotary Club of Road Town’s victory over their Rotary Club of Tortola counterparts that evened the series, Penn said the rivalry between the clubs will come down to the next three races to determine the winner. “It is definitely an interesting rivalry,” Penn noted.

Althea Scatliffe Primary School—who has won the series outright since its inception— hanged on to its Primary Schools Cross Country lead with a victory over Montessori and Enis Adams. Linden and Darwn Peters—no relation—ran unchallenged to easily win the men’s and women’s divisions with times of 11 minutes, 11.8 and 12 minutes, 42.5 seconds respectively. The race was run on an alternate course following heavy rains on Friday.

“I know when people eventually check the results they will notice that their times were significantly faster,” Penn said. “With our alternate route where they didn’t have to do the rocky terrain and also the little hill that surprises at the end, makes for a quicker course.”

Penn said the turnout of 128 participants was below expectation. “That could probably be because of electricity going out this morning as well as rains in the last couple days and people not being sure of the course,” she explained. “But, it was a good event. The rivalries are continuing. People are still putting down great performances and we can’t complain.”

This weekend on Virgin Gorda, defending champ Maxford Pipe and former champ Nicholas Laurac will battle for the overall crown. Laurac who missed the last race, upset Pipe in the series opener. Pipe won the last race with a one-minute improvement over his first run. The series on Tortola resumes on November 13, with other races on Nov. 20 and the finale on Nov. 27.
