Wins for Waterbabies and
Harneys to end spring touch league
The curtain
came down on the 2004 Spring Touch Rugby League with a defeat for new champions
TSC against the Waterbabies and a victory for Harneys against Sea Meadow House.
In doing so SMH swap the championship for the wooden spoon after a disappointing
campaign.
In winning 6-2
Harneys got a modicum of revenge for their defeat in the autumn title decider
against SMH. There was no real doubt as to the outcome after Harneys had raced
into a 4-0 lead thanks to two tries from Nadeem Sweiss and one apiece for Les
Elliott and Phil Kite. Steve Dougherty gave SMH some hope with a touch down just
before half time.
It looked to
be what the retiring champs wanted as seconds into the second period Russell
Dawes was on hand to complete a sweeping move with a score in the corner.
However, tired minds allowed in Duncan Brown and Phil Kite with his second, for
a 6-2 win.
With the
championship already won Tortola Sports Club knew they could relax and enjoy
themselves in their match with the Waterbabies. As the Waterbabies needed a win
to guarantee second place and TSC missing a number of regular players, it was no
surprise to see the Waterbabies establish a 3-0 half-time lead.
Cara Tyrell
and Casper Inson had given the Waterbabies the lead, which was well protected
with a miserly defence. However, in the second half two mistakes by the
Waterbabies on the TSC line were pounced upon by Dion Anselm and no-one was
going to halt his charges to the line which brought the new champions back into
the match. It took all the experience and know-how of the Waterbabies to take
the heat out of the match and finally their captain, Damian Pearson, went over
in the corner to guarantee the win.
After the
match TSC captain Mark Chapman lifted the winners trophy, whilst Rich Reading
took home the man of the tournament and leading try-scorer awards. The
Waterbabies Sarah Cockburn was voted woman of the tournament.
