 Mathias breaks Shot Put, Hammer National Records

Boise State University Jr. Eric “Shaq’ Mathias broke the Shot Put and Hammer Throw National Records at the Western Athletic Conference Championships in Houston over the weekend. Mathias eclipsed Raphael “Booker” Jack’s mark with a toss of 15.41 Meters (50’6 ¾”) to finish eight overall. He was seventh in the Hammer with a heave of 45.57 Meters, 149’6”.

Eagles claw Under 17 Boys team

Kevin Shallow, Nickie Prince and Soiul Lues had one goal each, as the Eagles defeated the Under-17 Boys team 3-1 in BVI Football Association Spring League action at the Greenland Field. Shane Davis scored the only goal for the Under 17 Boys. Valencia shave Virgin Gorda United 4-3. Ranneley Cain scored two goals and Roger Alexander and Lionel Grimms scored one each for Valencia. Troy Williams scored two goals and Yunne Jack had the other for Virgin Gorda United. Avondale Williams’ hat trick fired the Under Dogs to a 4-2 victory over the HBA Panthers. Brian Griffith had the other goal. Kion Liburd and Raymond Cummings scored one goal each for HBA Panthers.

The Veterans defeated Wolves 6-2. Garnet Ferron and Dwayne Ross scored two goals each for Veterans while Montgomery Butler and Coy Robonson added one each. Peter Samuel and Rohan Lennon scored one goal each for Wolves. In women’s play, 7-11 Women’s Team and the Under 19 Team played to a halftime draw, with Missy Verdoliva scoring the only goal for 7-11 and Kezia Wattley scoring the only goal for the Under 19 team. In the second half, 7 -11 forfeited the game and the Under 19 ladies team emerged the winners..

Dasani Community 5K Series Race on Saturday

Race four of the Dasani Community 5K Series is set for 7 a.m. on Saturday, the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College. Registration for the 3.1 mile race begins at 6:30 a.m. The race will use the existing College Classic Series course, with the addition of the South Campus and the famed Paraquita Beast. The series will culminate with the Olympic Day Run in June.

Pockwood Pond Surprise Cycle race on Sunday

The next race on the BVI Cycling Federation’s calendar is the Pockwood Pond Surprise. The race start at Peg Leg in Nanny Cay, heading eastwards to Prospect Reef roundabout via Rockville and Slaney. From the roundabout the race heads to the Steel Point, through Smuggler's Cove out towards to Long Bay and into Belmont, before exiting at the West End Community Center. From there, riders will go over Towers Hill and descend into Cox Heath and Pockwood Pond before finishing at Nanny Cay. Registration convenes at 6:30 a.m. Breakfast follows the race.
