Young
Gunz facing Terminators in Volleyball championship rematch
BY DEAN GREENAWAY
Defending
champions Terminators and Young Gunz—the two best teams in the BVI Amateur
Volleyball Association league—will clash at the Belle Vue Gym on Saturday in a
classic rematch of last year’s championship series.
Young Gunz
overpowered Raw Power in an action packed five set match 22-25, 25-16, 24-26,
25-16 and 15-9 for the right to meet Terminators.
Raw Power’s player
coach Willis Potter said it was another hard fought game. “Five sets once again
for the first time and those guys just won,” Potter said after reflecting on the
match. “There were controversies and questionable call—90% of those calls went
in their favor. We had a young referee on the ladder and Neville (Brathwaite)
played him like a fiddle. He did a good job as a captain,” Potter said. “He made
the calls for the ref and he made them, so they won.”
Brathwaite
acknowledged that Raw Power is a good team and said his team came out and played
to a level that would be sufficient to beat them. “We are going to have to step
up to another level (against Terminators) we are looking for a good game. It
will be a dog fight.”
Terminators setter
Osbert “Cushung” Pole who scouted the game said they have to keep the fire they
have and stay focused. “We had a very good season. We have no complaints other
than a few faults here and there that we’ve ironed out already in practice,”
Pole explained. “We’re ready for another championship,” he added. “How much is
this going to be? 10? 11? Who knows? We stop counting now.”
Brathwaite said
Young Gunz have to be a team to beat Terminators. “We can’t break down in the
crunch when things getting down,” he explained. “Don’t start pointing fingers at
each other. Once you have that core strength right there there’s nothing else
that can stop that.”
Young Gunz’s coach
Kwele Williams said once he has his full team, he’s confident they can deny
Terminators their 11th title. “They are hungry and they talk a lot,” Williams
noted. “I must say, for people who talk, they back it up. We’ve played then good
during the series but the problem is that my guys don’t finish out the sets. If
we can finish our sets and my strong guys come out, I think we have a pretty
good chance.”
Geriatrix will
face Raw Power in the women’s championship. Geriatrix was a straight set 25-11,
25-3 and 25-13 winner over the HLSCC Stingrays. Raw Power stopped Te-Sito 25-20,
25-19 and 25-22.
