Minister provides Update on
Scholarships
Eighty-four
scholarships were awarded between June 2003 and April 2004 under the BVI
Scholarship Program. In responding to a question by Leader of the Opposition
Hon. Ralph T. O’Neal, Education Minister Hon. Lloyd Black stated that of those
84 awards, 34 were given to students from the various secondary schools who met
the 6.0 and above rate point average.
Mr. Black said
the first two of the four years are tenable at the H. L. Stoutt Community
College at Paraquita Bay, and of the 34 awards to high school graduates: 4
awardees are pursuing Accounts; 2 Corporate and Trust Administration; 2 Computer
Studies; 2 Finance; 2 General Business Studies; 3 General Science; 6 General
Studies; 6 Legal Studies; 1 Natural Science; and 1 Office Administration.
15 of the 84
awards were approved for studies at the H. L. Stoutt Community College only, the
Minister said.
Another 35 of
the 84 recipients of BVI scholarships were awarded scholarships for studies
abroad: 2 in Accounting; 2 in Architecture; 1 in Business Studies; 3 in
Communications; 7 in Computer Studies; 4 in Culinary Arts; 1 in Physical
Education; 2 in Electronics; 2 in Finance; 1 in Food Education; 1 in Law and
Forensic Science; 1 in Marine Studies; 1 in Medicine; 2 in Nursing; 2 in
Psychology; 1 in Social Work; and 1 in Tourism. 30 of the scholarship recipients
studying abroad are in the USA; the others are in Canada (1), United Kingdom
(2), Puerto Rico (1), and United States Virgin Islands (1).
