Dion Crabbe sprints to ‘Athlete
of the Meet’ honors in Puerto Rico

In a tune up
for the Athens Olympics, Dion Crabbe sprinted to ‘Athlete of the Meet’ honors
with wins in the 100 and 200 meters at the Frankie Colon Invitational in Ponce,
Puerto Rico on July 17.
Though
disappointed with his times of 10.57 and 21.02 seconds respectively, Crabbe
became the second BVI athlete in three years to capture the outstanding male
award.
Half-miler
Ludence Smith was also among the medals after finishing second in the 800 meters
in a time of 1 minute 58.42 seconds. Keita Cline, champion male athlete in 2002,
finished fifth overall in the 200, covering the half lap in 21.75 seconds. In
the 400 meters, quarter miler Kevin Fahie circled the oval in 50.13, while Ackim
“Dundee” Lewis had a time of 50.63 to finish sixth and seventh respectively.
Ralston
“Grandfather” Henry was fifth in the Long Jump with a best leap of 6.64 meters
(21’9½”). He also had an unlooked for 11.53 seconds in the 100 meters, good for
eleventh overall. Adriana Herbert, the lone female at the meet pulled her
hamstring in the 100 meters.
Crabbe is
expected to head to Europe in search of meets before competition in the Olympic
Games begin on August 20. He will run both sprints at the games. He has recorded
seasons bests of 10.38 legal and 10.36 wind aided and 20.93 legal at the
Whitsuntide Games in Grenada on May 29.
