USVI to play BVI in CONCACAF U-19 Soccer match Saturday
BY DEAN GREENAWAY
History will be made Saturday when the British and U.S. Virgin Islands
clash at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds at 5 p.m. in the first leg of
the CONCACAF Women's U-19 Soccer match. Admission is $3. Both teams will
meet again January 24, at St. Croix's Paul E. Joseph Stadium, with the
winner of the series advancing to meet the Dominican Republic in the zone
that also includes Haiti and the Bahamas. The CONCACAF finals will be held
in Canada between May 26 and June 6.
While the team isn't at the level where he would have liked it to be, Coach
Peterson Azile says the time is here. "They will have to go out and do the
best they can against the USVI," Azile said, adding that he would like to
see parents and others involved in the youth soccer program supporting the
game. "The Under 19 girls are a group of young girls trying their best to
represent the BVI. In situations like this, you have to win your first
game, because your first game is at home and you always want to finish with
a good result."
During Tuesday's practice, Azile stressed the importance of the match up
with the USVI. "This is an opportunity of a lifetime," Azile pointed out.
"The more games we win, the further we will go. We can go as far as Canada
for 10 days to play against some of the top countries. All we have to do is
to come out and practice to the best of our ability and once we practice to
a high standard, then in the game you will play at a high standard."
Azile says having a chance to field a team at the CONCACAF level feels
good. "I remember when we started, we could not even form a women's team,"
he recalled. "Now we can have an over 25 team and an under 19 team, which
means we have more people coming out to play the game and more youngsters
getting involved with the game.
