Three team Women’s Football league scrapped
The BVI Football Association Women’s 11-A-Side Soccer League that was scheduled to open on Sunday, February 15, was canned after one of the three teams in the league failed to show for the activities. Despite the absence of Seven Eleven, members of the HBA Panthers and the BVI Under 19 team showed up for an opening ceremony which never took place. A BVI Football Association official said a meeting with women footballers will be called to assess the problems with getting the league started.

Mathias sets Indoor best in Discus Throw
Eric Mathias recorded an indoor Shot Put best of 15.17 meters, (49ft 9¼”) and finished fifth Saturday in the Holiday Inn Invitational held at Boise State University in Idaho. Mathias, a Central Arizona College transfer, is in his junior year at Boise State. In Arizona, Central Arizona College sophomore Kevin Fahie made his 2004 season debut at his home track with a 5th place finish in the 600 meters in 1 minute, 25.0 seconds.

BVI Rugby players on Caribbean All Stars team
Team captain Damian Pearson and Club president Barry Mitchell are among nine BVI Rugby players selected to play for a Caribbean All Stars team at this weekend’s two-day, fifteen-a-side competition Ruggerfest in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
“It’s a big boost for Rugby in the region as nothing like this has happened before and we’re happy to support it,” Mitchell said. “For the guys who have been called up it’s a just reward for all their efforts in promoting Rugby in the Caribbean.”
It is the first time that BVI players have been called for the event and Mitchell hopes it is something that will continue in the future as more players come through the development program. “It’s a great boost for the club, Rugby in the BVI and the Caribbean. Hopefully in years to come there will be tournaments for Caribbean representative teams through all the age groups.”
”Joining Pearson and Barry are: flankers John Greenwood and Andrew Simmons; wingers Rob McIntyre and Vic Franklin; fly-half Peter Unwin, Hooker Clinton Hempel and prop Chris McKenzie. The Caribbean All Stars takes on St Lambert Locks and White Plains Classic in their opening matches.

Cavaliers elect executive ahead of Cricket Season
The Cavaliers Cricket Club has appointed office bearers for 2004 in preparation for the BVI Cricket Association (BVICA)’s senior tournament this year, during Feb. 7 elections. Ronald Singh was elected unopposed for a third consecutive term as Manager, while Ghirdar Deonarine was voted as Assistant Manager.
Other officers elected were Vijay Jhappan (Secretary/Treasurer); Karamchand Sukhdeo (Assistant Secretary/Treasurer); Vishal Bharrat (Captain); Riaz Ali (Vice-captain); and Daniel Singh (Public Relations Officer). This is the first year that the Club has decided to appoint an Assistant Manager and a Public Relations Officer.
A special committee was appointed to select teams when the cricket season gets underway. Those serving on the Selection Committee are the Captain, the Vice-Captain and the Secretary/Treasurer, along with Mr. Jargo Dasrat and Mr. Roopnarine Ramsamooch.
The manager commended the two major club sponsors for their support, Ms. Diana Bruce, proprietor of Little Denmark Apartments, and Bob Hodge, owner of Actspectation. Cavaliers won the BVICA knockout trophy in 2002 and followed up by winning the 2003 tournament.

BVI Little League Baseball season opens on Saturday
The BVI Little League Association invites the public to the opening of its 2004 Baseball and Girls Softball League on Saturday, February 21, at 9 a.m. on the Old Recreation Grounds. Parents are asked to please have their children dressed in full uniform and assembled on the field by 8:30 a.m. sharp. Steve Parillon contributes to Henderson State victory
The outside play of Tarvoris Uzoigwe and the inside play of Steve Parillon, helped the Henderson State chalk up its eighth straight win Monday night, beating No. 9 Christian Brothers 76-70 at De LaSalle Gym in Memphis, Tennessee.
Parillon emerged for 19 second half points as the Reddies built a 19 point lead with 11:13 to play with the help of a 19-6 run. He finished with 23 points and had 10 rebounds. The Reddies have won eight straight games, and recorded its 20th win of the season. Ranked 15th in the latest Division II National Poll, Henderson has recorded 20 wins in each of the last eight seasons.

Jason Edwin scores 15 in Kent State University victory
Junior forward Jason Edwin finished with 15 points, four rebounds, three blocks and three steals, as the Kent State University men’s basketball team, 18-3 overall and 12-1 in Mid America Conference play, won its eighth straight game, rallying from an early 13-point deficit to defeat Bowling Green State University (10-13, 6-7 MAC) in front of a national audience at home on ESPN2 on Saturday. Edwin had 34 minutes of court time and was 5-7 from the field and 4-5 at the charity stripe. Edwin was coming off scoring three points in 12 minutes in a 79-75 win against the University of Buffalo.

Community 5K Spring Race Series kicks off on February 28
A Community 5K Spring Race Series kicks off at 7 a.m. on February 28 from Cills Dry Goods in Sea Cows Bay, to the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds. The Spring 5K series will involve the Rotary Club of Tortola, Rotary Club of Road Town, Sports Division, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College and the BVI Olympic Committee. One race will be held monthly, culminating with the Olympic Day Run in June. The aim of the series is to piggy back off the fall College Classic Series and help to encourage distance running in the BVI. Jolly Roger College Classic on February 29
The next race on the BVI Cycling Federation calendar is the Feb. 29, Jolly Roger College Classic. The 28 mile race begins at 7 a.m. at the Jolly Roger in West End, heads to the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College and returns to finish at the West End Police Station. Registration is $13 for non members and $10 for members and includes breakfast. Children will pay $5. The courses are as follows: Road Bikes, 40 miles. West End to the college, return to West End, back to Prospect Reef Roundabout and finish in West End. Mountain Bikes: West End to the College and return. Fun/Novice: West End to Port Purcell Roundabout and return. Youth: West End to Prospect Reef Roundabout and return. Meanwhile, the Federation will hold a general meeting at the BVI High School at 7 p.m. on March 3.
